Digital Product Passport

How to implement it in your production line

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a mandatory tool that will be introduced across the European Union starting in 2026, as part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

Its purpose is to enhance transparency and sustainability for industrial and consumer goods by providing key information about each product. This document requires manufacturers to disclose clear and accessible data regarding the origin, composition, recyclability, and lifecycle of every individual item.

Faced with this challenge, technology plays a decisive role. At Limitronic, with our expertise in direct industrial printing on products and packaging, we’re ahead of the curve—offering concrete, tailored solutions that meet both market demands and regulatory requirements.

What technical requirements must the Digital Product Passport meet?

The DPP must be linked to a unique product identifier, such as a QR code or barcode.

This identifier must be physically present on the product, its packaging, or documentation, and must include at minimum the following information:

  • Product performance
  • Installation, usage, maintenance, and repair
  • Refurbishment and recycling
  • Hazardous substances and lifecycle traceability

Limitronic’s Solution: Direct Digital Printing for a Connected World

At Limitronic, we offer customized solutions that enable companies to successfully implement the Digital Product Passport using our cutting-edge technology:

  • Direct printing on packaging, product, or final surface (no need for labels or additional consumables)
  • Unique codes per unit: QR, Datamatrix, barcodes, or alphanumeric identifiers
  • Real-time data integration from CRM, ERP, or MES systems
  • Dynamic links to traceability platforms, digital twins, or technical documentation
  • Compliance with the European standard for unique product identification
  • Enable post-sale experiences, technical support, or authenticity validation
  • Print variable data from CRM or SaaS platforms as part of the workflow

“We’re talking about every product, every package, every machine having its own digital identity—visible directly on its surface, without intermediaries or errors. It’s full, online traceability, ready to meet the requirements of the Digital Product Passport” says Limitronic’s Head of R&D&I.

Which industries can benefit from Limitronic’s technology for the Digital Product Passport?

Our extensive experience across multiple sectors allows us to anticipate regulatory demands and support the implementation of this tool—both in industries where it’s already mandatory and those where it soon will be:

  • Food & Beverage (sustainable packaging, batch traceability)
  • Cosmetics & Pharmaceuticals (authenticity, personalized instructions, unique batches)
  • Industrial Machinery (digital twins, QR-linked technical support)
  • Logistics & Recycling (smart labels that don’t peel, scan-based control)

For brands looking to stay ahead of regulatory requirements and strengthen their brand value through sustainability and transparency, our direct printing system becomes a key asset:

Beyond printing a code, it enables a traceable, sustainable, and intelligent information channel between the product and its value chain.

The Digital Product Passport revolution is underway.

At Limitronic, we turn compliance into opportunity—offering solutions that transform packaging into a platform for communication and customer loyalty.
